Baby showers are more relaxed than most people assume and more social than they expect. You will be there for three hours, sitting on borrowed chairs, holding a plate, and quite possibly on a rug at some point. Dress for that.
The venue decides the level
- Someone's home
- Level 5 to 6. Casual to cute casual. A midi dress or nice trousers and a top. Shoes you can slip off at the door without thinking about your socks.
- Restaurant or tea room
- Level 6 to 7. Cute casual to smart casual. A midi dress or skirt and knit, and a real shoe rather than a trainer.
- Garden or backyard
- Level 6, with outdoor adjustments: midi hemline, block heel or flat, and a layer for later.
- Hired venue or hotel
- Level 7 to 8. Smart casual to business casual. This is the only version where a blazer or a structured dress is the right call.
Three baby shower outfits from your own closet
The midi dress
Cute casual · level 6- Midi dress in a light color or small print
- Flat sandal, low block heel or clean loafer
- Cardigan or denim jacket
- Crossbody bag, big enough for a gift bag if needed
- Simple gold jewelry
Why it works. One garment, no waistband decisions, and a midi length that works whether you end up on a dining chair or a floor cushion. The layer is genuinely useful because these events often start indoors and move outside.
Trousers and a nice top
Cute casual to smart casual · level 6-7- Wide-leg or straight trousers in cream, tan, navy or olive
- Blouse, fine knit or a good short-sleeve top
- Flat leather sandal or loafer
- Belt if the top is tucked
- One considered accessory
Why it works. The most comfortable option and the best one if games are involved, because you never have to think about your hemline. Trousers also solve the problem of an unheated house or a windy garden.
Skirt and knit
Cute casual · level 6- A-line or pleated midi skirt
- Fine knit or fitted tee, tucked
- Flat or low heel
- Cardigan you would be happy to be photographed in
- Small bag
Why it works. Separates give you the polish of a dress with more flexibility across temperatures. The tuck is what lifts it from errand casual to cute casual without any extra effort.
If you are the mother-to-be
You will be photographed more than anyone else in the room and you will be on your feet for most of it. Prioritize, in this order: something you can breathe in, a defined position for the waist that is comfortable rather than fashionable, and shoes you can wear for three hours with swollen feet.
- Empire or under-bust waistlines photograph well and stay comfortable as the day goes on.
- A solid color reads more clearly in photographs than a busy print, especially in group shots.
- Bodycon knits photograph beautifully and can become uncomfortable by hour two. Choose a stretch fabric with recovery rather than compression.
- Flat sandals, block heels or clean trainers all look intentional. Nobody expects a heel.
- If you might open gifts sitting on the floor, test the outfit sitting cross-legged first.
What makes a baby shower outfit look wrong
- Overdressing to cocktail.
- A satin cocktail dress at a home baby shower overdresses you by six rungs and makes the host uncomfortable. Daytime fabrics in light colors are the whole register: cotton, linen, poplin, jersey, fine knit.
- Anything you cannot sit low in.
- Games, gift-opening and small children mean floor level happens. A short hemline or a stiff waistband will make the whole afternoon slightly stressful. Test the outfit sitting on the floor.
- Heels at a house party.
- Many homes are shoes-off, and standing on hardwood in heels for three hours is unpleasant regardless. A flat or a low block heel is the more considered choice, not the lazier one.
- White, if the mother-to-be is in white.
- Not a rule the way it is at a wedding, but increasingly showers have a color theme and the guest of honor is often in cream or white. One text to the host resolves it.
