Style by Cher or Whering: which should I use?

The short answer

Use Whering if you want to catalog an entire wardrobe for free, track sustainability and resale, or you are on Android. Use Style by Cher if your clothes are fine but your outfits are not, and you want a photo of what you are wearing critiqued with specific fixes. Whering is the better cataloging tool; Cher is the better second opinion.

What Whering does better

  • It is free with unlimited items and no recurring subscription. That is a genuinely strong position and we do not match it: our free tier caps at 50 closet items. If your goal is a complete digital catalog at no cost, Whering is the better answer.
  • It is on Android. We are not, at all. For a large share of people this settles the question before any feature comparison starts.
  • Sustainability and wear analytics are a real strength: wear rate, new versus pre-loved intake, color palette gaps, item longevity. We track none of this.
  • It has the most active community in the category, including browsing other people's wardrobes and getting outfit input from friends. Our closets are private to the account with no social layer at all, which is deliberate and also means there is nothing here if community is what you want.
  • Packing lists, lookbooks and planning tools we have not built.
  • It is older and larger, which means more edge cases handled and a deeper feature set for organizing a big wardrobe.

What Style by Cher does that Whering does not

One thing, essentially, and whether it matters depends entirely on which problem you have.

  • Outfit critique from a photograph. Take a mirror selfie and get told what is off and what to change: proportion, fabric weight, formality mismatch, color temperature, missing structure. Whering will help you assemble outfits from your catalog; it will not tell you the one you are wearing has a hem landing at your widest point.
  • Reasoning rather than combinations. Every answer explains why, which is the part that transfers to the next outfit and the next purchase.
  • It works with very few items. Because critiquing one outfit does not require a full catalog, you get something useful from the first photo rather than after four hours of cataloging.
  • Closet items can be added from mirror selfies, so the catalog fills in as a side effect of getting feedback rather than as a separate project.
  • Occasion reasoning from what you own. Tell it what you are dressing for and it works from your closet and, where relevant, the weather and your location.

How to choose

  1. 1If you are on Android, use Whering. There is no decision to make.
  2. 2If your problem is that you cannot see what you own, use Whering. It is free, unlimited, and cataloging is what it is built for.
  3. 3If your problem is that you keep buying clothes you do not wear, use Whering's wear-rate and intake statistics. That data is the fastest route to the pattern.
  4. 4If your problem is that your clothes are good and your outfits still look wrong, use Style by Cher. A catalog does not diagnose that, because the failure is in the relationships between garments rather than in the garments.
  5. 5There is no reason not to use both. Whering as the free wardrobe database, Cher as the second opinion on the way out of the door. They overlap far less than the category descriptions suggest.

Ask Cher yourself

Here's what I'm wearing. Whering can't tell me this, so: what's off and how do I fix it?

Style by Cher answers this against the clothes you actually own, so the outfit she gives you is one you can wear tonight. Free on the App Store for iPhone.

Related questions

Is Whering free?

Yes. As of mid-2026 Whering has no recurring subscription, allows unlimited items, and offers optional one-time in-app purchases such as Outfit Maker and credit packs. Its Supporter Club, a donation-style membership, is closed to new members.

What does Style by Cher do that Whering does not?

Critique the outfit you are actually wearing. You take a mirror selfie and get specific fixes based on proportion, fabric weight, formality and color, plus pieces from your own closet to add or swap. Whering helps you assemble and track outfits but does not judge one.

Which is better for cataloging your wardrobe?

Whering, clearly. It allows unlimited items on the free tier, has background removal and import tools, and adds wear-rate, longevity and sustainability statistics on top. Style by Cher caps the free closet at 50 items and is built around judgment rather than inventory.

Is Style by Cher on Android?

No. It is iPhone only and requires iOS 15.1 or later. Whering is available on both iOS and Android, which makes it the default choice for Android users regardless of the rest of this comparison.
