What coastal actually means
Relaxed seaside dressing built on natural fibers, a light and salt-faded palette, and easy silhouettes that work in wind and humidity. Comfortable without reading like loungewear.
Where it comes from
Draws on Mediterranean and New England seaside dressing, both of which prioritize breathable natural fiber and light color for practical reasons. The recent internet version, sometimes called coastal grandmother, added a layer of relaxed formality: linen and cashmere rather than swimwear and cover-ups.

Where it sits on the Formality Ladder
Levels 4 to 7. It tops out at smart casual: linen and flat sandals will not carry a level 9 room, and trying to formalise it usually just produces a creased version of business casual.
What coastal is not
These are the aesthetics it gets confused with, and the single variable that separates each one.
- Resort
- Resort dressing is brighter, more decorative and built around swimwear and its cover-ups. Coastal is a full clothed wardrobe in a muted palette; a kaftan is resort, linen trousers are coastal.
- Minimalism
- Coastal shares the restraint but not the precision. Minimalism wants clean lines and exact fit; coastal wants ease, natural texture and fabric that moves in wind.
- Coastal grandmother
- The same aesthetic with the volume lower and the fabric better: more cashmere, more oversized shirting, less denim, and nothing fitted. A subset rather than a separate look.
How to build it from a wardrobe you already have
- 1Pull everything linen, cotton and cotton-blend into one place. That is your base.
- 2Lean into your lightest neutrals: white, cream, oatmeal, faded navy, sage.
- 3Wear shirts open over a tank or camisole rather than buttoned. It is the defining gesture of the aesthetic.
- 4Swap heavier bags for woven, canvas or raffia.
- 5Choose flat leather sandals and canvas sneakers over anything with a heel.
How people get it wrong
- Wearing actual beachwear.
- Coastal is not resort or swim. A kaftan, a sarong or a crochet cover-up reads as poolside rather than as coastal dressing. Linen trousers and a shirt is the register.
- Nautical costume.
- A striped knit is coastal. A striped knit with gold anchor buttons, a rope belt and a sailor cap is a costume. One reference at a time.
- Everything loose.
- Easy silhouettes need one point of definition or the outfit reads shapeless. Tuck the tank, belt the trousers, or wear a fitted layer under the open shirt.
- Choosing the palette but not the fabric.
- Cream and sage in polyester does not read coastal, because the aesthetic depends on how natural fiber drapes and creases. Linen, cotton, and their blends are the requirement; the colors are secondary.
Adjacent aesthetics
In the Style by Cher closet taxonomy, coastal sits next to resort, california casual, minimal. If a piece does not quite fit this aesthetic, one of those is usually where it belongs.
